Professor Nathaniel Mofolo

Associate Professor, University of Pretoria

Associate Professor Nathaniel Mofolo is Head of the Department of Family Medicine and Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital. A clinician, academic leader, and health systems strategist with a twenty-five-year career spanning three South African universities, he holds a Doctorate in Business Administration in Higher Education Management (University of Bath, UK, 2023), a Postgraduate Diploma in Applications of Artificial Intelligence, IoT, and Medical Devices in Telemedicine (2025), and is completing an MSc in E-Health and Big Data (2026).

He has led a 37-department School of Medicine (Dean, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, 2022–2024) and a 25-discipline School of Clinical Medicine (Head, University of the Free State, 2017–2022).

A former member of the HPCSA Executive and Management Committees (2020–2025), he has authored national policy on telehealth, AI ethics in clinical practice, and continuing professional development. Currently, his research and advocacy are focused on the governance of AI and digital health in African health professions education, NHI implementation, and community-oriented primary care.
