MTN Rwanda enables cross-border mobile money service

MTN Rwanda has introduced its cross-border money transfer service to Uganda. According to MTN, the service will nitially be one way only. This is due to MTN Uganda awaiting the necessary approvals from the Bank of Uganda to let its own users send money to Rwanda.

MTN and Airtel had announced plans to start cross-border mobile money transfers among Northern Corridor states Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda in November in 2014.

MTN Group signed a collaboration agreement to enable its mobile money users in Uganda, Rwanda and Zambia to make international remittances with Vodafone’s M-Pesa customers in Kenya, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique, and vice versa. Once fully operational, the cross-border mobile transfer service is expected help boost trade in the region and lower the cost of transactions.

According to a report via rnanews.com, MTN Rwanda has additionally partnered with Societe Petroliere (SP Limited) to enable its customers to pay for fuel at any of the 25 SP petrol stations across the country using MTN Mobile Money.
