Local apps get free download from MTN Nigeria

MTN Nigeria has announced a month of free downloads for all Nigerian applications that fall under the APPtitude promotion from the leading telecommunications operator. The goal is to continue to increase the number of local apps on the market as an effort to spur growth across different tech sectors.

The campaign runs throughout May and gives Nigerians on the network the opportunity “to download local apps free by texting APP to 131,” the company said in a statement.

“As part of the offer, an APPtitude portal has been created on the MTN website, to curate a host of local apps under different categories such as sports, entertainment, lifestyle, health/fitness, business and religion,” the company added.

For the month, users are able to download any of the eligible apps free of charge. But MTN isn’t stopping at just the apps.

MTN continued to say that it will continue to support app developers, associations and SMEs “in converting their websites to mobile applications while bearing the cost of maintaining and hosting the apps.”

The goal of the promotion and others similar is to create a marketplace for local African coders and developers to publish their work online and have larger access to a wide-range of users.

Any developer can submit his or her application on the APPtitude portal.
