MTN in final preparations ahead of 5th MTN Kampala Marathon

Kampala, Uganda November 20, 2008: As r egistered participants continue to receive their kits through the week and infrastructure set up continues, p reparations are in high gear for the 5 th annual MTN Kampala Marathon slated for this Sunday 23 rd November. Foreign athletes and media are expected to arrive on Friday morning. The athletes will mainly come from the neighbouring East African countries namely Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.

On arrival they are expected to tour the marathon routes on Friday afternoon, as Kampala prepares to host one of its biggest sporting events. 10, 800 runners are expected to take part in this year's event that has also attracted a cross section of corporate organizations, with Stanbic Bank registering the highest number of individual participants, that is, 584, followed by MTN with 468 members of staff who will be running while DFCU Bank has registered the highest number of teams for a corporate, which are 10 teams. Last year's participants were slightly over 6,000.

There are several innovations this year to ensure a different experience for all the participants especially those taking part for the first time. For example, athletes will receive their timing results via SMS on their phones after the race, and MTN is also setting up a media center with internet access to avail the media a facility for compiling up to minute updates on the results, status and progress of the race. Certificates will also be able to be downloaded off the MTN Kampala Marathon website, www.mtnkampalamarathon.com after Sunday and will therefore not be given out on the day.
